Date Difference Calculator

Pick two dates and get the exact span between them — as calendar years, months and days, and as clean totals in days, weeks, months and hours. Leap years and unequal month lengths are handled properly, which is precisely where mental arithmetic and spreadsheets go wrong.

How to use the date difference calculator

  1. 1Pick the earlier date — or either date; reversed inputs are handled and flagged.
  2. 2Pick the later date.
  3. 3Read the calendar breakdown — years, months, days — for durations people say aloud.
  4. 4Use the totals row — days, weeks, hours — for deadlines, interest and anything contractual.

Two kinds of answer, both correct

'How long between March 10th and June 3rd?' has two honest answers: 2 months and 24 days, or 85 days. The calendar form is how humans discuss durations; the total is what contracts, courts and interest calculations run on. This calculator gives both at once because using the wrong form is the classic date mistake — a '3-month' notice period and a '90-day' notice period are different lengths in most months.

The calendar breakdown borrows days from the preceding month when it must — the same borrowing that makes 'a month after January 31st' a genuinely ambiguous phrase — and the totals sidestep the ambiguity entirely by counting elapsed days.

Leap years are handled by counting actual calendar days rather than multiplying by 365. Across a span that includes February 29th, the total is one day longer than naive arithmetic expects — invisible in conversation, decisive in a deadline.

The uses that bring people here

Notice periods and deadlines top the list: resignation notice, statutory filing windows, warranty periods, limitation periods for legal claims — all defined either in days or in calendar months, and this page computes whichever form the document uses. When the stakes are legal, check the document's own counting convention too: some count from the day after service, some include it.

Interest and rent both accrue per day between dates — a security-deposit dispute or a delayed payment claim starts with exactly this day count. The EMI and interest calculators on this site take over from there.

The rest is life arithmetic: days until an exam, the exact age of a project, how long a visa has left, anniversary spans. For age specifically — where eligibility cutoffs make the count official — the dedicated Age Calculator linked below handles 'age as on' dates.

Conventions worth knowing

This calculator counts the days between the two dates — March 1st to March 2nd is one day. Some contexts count inclusively, treating both endpoints as counted days, which makes the same span two days. Legal documents usually specify; when yours does not, the exclusive count shown here is the common default.

Weeks are floor-divided from days: 45 days shows as 6 weeks, not 6.43 — the fractional part remains visible in the day total. Months in the totals row are calendar months elapsed, not day-count approximations, so they agree with the calendar breakdown above them.

As always on this site, the computation is local: dates you enter — which can be as personal as data gets — are never uploaded or stored. The page also works offline once loaded, which makes it a dependable pocket reference during meetings where someone asks how many days a clause actually gives you.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are between two dates?

Pick both dates above — the total-days figure counts actual elapsed calendar days, leap days included. March 10th to June 3rd, for instance, is 85 days.

Does it count both end dates?

No — it counts the span between them (exclusive), the common convention. If your context counts inclusively, add one to the day total.

Is a 3-month period the same as 90 days?

Rarely — calendar months vary from 28 to 31 days, so 3 calendar months spans 89 to 92 days depending on the start date. Use whichever form your document actually specifies; the calculator shows both.

What if I enter the dates in the wrong order?

The calculator quietly swaps them, shows the span, and notes that the dates were reversed — the distance between two dates is the same in either direction.

Are my dates uploaded?

No — everything is computed in the browser and nothing you enter leaves the page.
