The honest inputs make the honest answer

The formula is distance ÷ mileage × price, and the only place it goes wrong is the mileage you feed it. Brochure figures (ARAI, in India) are laboratory numbers; real-world mileage runs 15–30% lower, and city traffic punishes it hardest. A car sold as '20 km/l' that returns 15 in town costs a third more per trip than the brochure math promises — use the figure your own tank-to-tank experience gives you.

Highway and city mileage differ enough to matter for planning: steady 80 km/h cruising is most vehicles' best case, while stop-and-go traffic with air-conditioning is the worst. For a mixed route, a weighted guess beats either extreme — or run the calculator twice and treat the answers as your range.

Fuel price is the volatile input — it differs by city and moves with taxes and crude. The calculator takes today's local price as you know it rather than pretending to fetch one, which also keeps the page working offline and your travel plans on your own device.

Per-kilometre thinking

The most reusable output is cost per kilometre: a 15 km/l petrol car at ₹105 a litre costs ₹7 per km in fuel. That single number prices every errand — the 8 km market run is ₹56 each way — and makes comparisons honest: against a cab's per-km fare, against the train for an intercity trip, or between your two-wheeler at ₹2 per km and your car at ₹7.

For shared road trips, the per-person split is the feature that ends arguments: fuel for the whole route divided by the people in the car, computed before anyone floats a number from memory. Add tolls separately — FASTag statements make them easy to total — and the settlement is arithmetic instead of negotiation.

Fuel is also only the marginal cost. Tyres, servicing and depreciation roughly double the true per-km cost of running a car; fuel-only figures are the right basis for splitting a trip, and the wrong basis for deciding whether owning the car beats cabs. Know which question you are asking.

Squeezing the number down

Driving style moves mileage more than most hardware: gentle acceleration, anticipating stops instead of braking late, and holding 60–80 km/h where the road allows can improve consumption 10–20% in the same vehicle. Tyre pressure at the recommended figure is the free upgrade almost everyone ignores — a few PSI low costs measurable fuel on every trip.

Load and drag matter at highway speed: roof racks, open windows at speed and a boot full of unused weight all tax the litre. None of it is dramatic alone; together it is the difference between your car's good weeks and bad ones.

And when the trip itself is the variable — comparing routes — remember the shorter route through town is not always the cheaper one.
