How to use the tonnes to kilograms converter
- 1Type the number of tonnes into the left-hand box.
- 2Read the equivalent in kilograms on the right — it updates as you type.
- 3Press the swap button to reverse the direction, or pick different units from the dropdowns.
- 4Check the reference table below for the values people look up most often.
How many kilograms are in a tonne?
One tonne is 1,000 kilograms. The full conversion is kilograms = tonnes × 1,000, and going the other way you divide instead of multiply.
A few anchor values worth memorising: 1,000 kg to the tonne, 10,000 kg to ten, and 100,000 kg to a hundred. The calculator above handles the rest, including the awkward decimals.
The reference table under the converter lists the values people look up most often, so for a common figure you can read the answer off directly rather than typing anything.
Worked examples
Three worked examples, each multiplying by 1,000:
2.5 t × 1,000 = 2,500 kg. 25 t × 1,000 = 25,000 kg. 250 t × 1,000 = 250,000 kg.
To reverse any of them, divide instead of multiplying — or use the swap button above, which does the same thing without the arithmetic. Reversing a converted value should return you to exactly what you started with; if it does not, something has been rounded too early.
Doing this conversion in your head
The factor here is 1,000, close enough to 1000 that multiplying by 1000 gives an answer within 0% of the exact figure. For everyday purposes that is the whole trick.
Since the factor is greater than one, the number always gets bigger: a tonne is smaller than a kilogram, so any quantity converts to more of them. If your answer came out smaller, you have divided when you should have multiplied.
That sanity check catches the majority of real conversion errors. Before trusting any converted figure, ask whether the direction of change makes sense — it takes a second and it is the single most effective safeguard there is.
When you need to convert tonnes to kilograms
The two units meet in a fairly predictable set of situations, and which one you are in tells you how much precision you actually need.
On the source side, tonnes measure freight loads, vehicle weights and industrial quantities. On the target side, kilograms are body weight, luggage allowances, grocery pricing and shipping quotes. The conversion is essentially a translation between those two worlds — most often because a figure produced in one context has to be understood, submitted or acted on in the other.
Where the converted figure will be cut, dosed, billed or filed, round once at the end rather than at each step. For a rough sense of scale, round freely.
The calculation never touches a server, which is why it is instant and why there is nothing here to sign up for.
What a tonne and a kilogram actually are
The tonne (t). The metric tonne — 1,000 kg, distinct from the US short ton of 907 kg.
The kilogram (kg). The SI base unit, redefined in 2019 in terms of the Planck constant rather than a metal cylinder in Paris.
The two units describe the same physical quantity, mass, from different traditions. Once both were tied to the same defined standard, converting between them became exact arithmetic rather than measurement.
Common mistakes when converting tonnes to kilograms
The main risk is rounding at the wrong moment. Converting and then rounding is not the same as rounding and then converting, and for anything going into engineering, dosing or finance the difference compounds. This tool carries the full double-precision value internally and rounds only for display, so copying the result gives you the unrounded number.
For a batch of figures, set the units once and work down the list rather than converting via a third unit — each intermediate step introduces its own rounding.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilograms are in one tonne?
One tonne equals 1,000 kilograms. Multiply by 1,000 to convert any value.
What is the formula to convert tonnes to kilograms?
kilograms = tonnes × 1,000
Is this converter accurate?
The constants are exact by definition rather than measured, so the only imprecision is the rounding applied when the answer is shown to you. Copy the result to get the unrounded figure.
Can I convert kilograms back to tonnes?
Press the ⇄ button to flip the direction, or divide by 1,000 instead of multiplying. There is a dedicated kilograms-to-tonnes page too.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
Nothing is transmitted. The calculation happens in the page itself, so it works with the network disconnected and leaves no trace behind.
